There have been a number of press releases issues by major banks recently stating confidently that the number of PPI claims being submitted is 'falling' and they are not going to be putting further provisions aside in respect of PPI refunds. Lloyds TSB, who are part of the same group as the Halifax Bank, have been singled out in many newspaper articles and reports as being the biggest culprit when it came to the PPI mis-selling scandal that has affected almost one in three adults across the UK. Recently, they confidently announced that the number of PPI claims they are receiving is dropping, in line with expectations, and no further provisions for PPI refunds are to made at present.
However, many claims management companies such as UK Money Solutions have reported that the number of complaints still being receieved in respect of Payment Protection Insurance is as high as ever, especially for claims against Lloyds TSB. Some industry experts, such as Craig Bernhardt who is chief executive of PPI complaints lobby Emcas, have questioned Lloyds' confident satements as to be 'underestimating' the number of potential complaints that could yet be made.
With an estimated 20 million PPI policies sold in the last 10 years alone, there was an incredible amount of potential claims that could have been made against the banks in respect of mis-sold payment protection insurance, and many analysts and experts say that at best only 50-60% of claims have so far been submitted. Add to that the historic complaints that could be potentially made (for claims 10 years or older) and the banks could yet have a lot of work to do to clean up the mess and end this saga once and for all.
